Barbie Hsu, a renowned Taiwanese actress best known for her role as Shan Cai in the 2001 television series “Meteor Garden,” has died at the age of 48. She succumbed to pneumonia resulting from complications related to the flu during a family vacation in Japan. Her younger sister, Dee Hsu, confirmed the news, expressing profound grief and gratitude for the support received during this challenging time.

Barbie Hsu, affectionately known as “Big S,” first gained prominence in the entertainment industry as a member of the pop duo S.O.S alongside her sister, Dee Hsu. However, it was her portrayal of Shan Cai in “Meteor Garden” that catapulted her to fame across East Asia. The series, an adaptation of the Japanese manga “Boys Over Flowers,” was a massive hit, leading to a sequel and solidifying Hsu’s status as a leading actress.

Following the success of “Meteor Garden,” Hsu expanded her acting portfolio with roles in various television dramas and films. Notable works include “Mars” (2004), where she starred alongside Vic Chou, and “Corner with Love” (2007). Her versatility and on-screen presence endeared her to fans and critics alike, making her a household name in the Chinese-speaking world.

In her personal life, Hsu married Chinese entrepreneur Wang Xiaofei in 2010, with whom she had two children. The couple divorced in 2021. In a surprising turn of events, Hsu rekindled a past romance and married South Korean musician Koo Jun-yup, also known as DJ Koo, in 2022. Their reunion after two decades apart garnered significant media attention and was celebrated by fans.

Hsu had a history of health issues, including epilepsy and heart disease, which had led to multiple hospitalizations in the past. These pre-existing conditions may have contributed to the severity of her illness following the flu infection. Her untimely passing has prompted discussions about the importance of flu vaccinations and the potential risks associated with influenza, especially for individuals with underlying health conditions.

The news of Hsu’s death has elicited an outpouring of grief from fans and colleagues across the globe. Social media platforms have been flooded with tributes celebrating her contributions to the entertainment industry and her impact on popular culture. On China’s Weibo microblogging service, the topic became the top trending subject, reflecting her widespread influence and the deep affection held for her by the public.

Fellow actors and industry professionals have also expressed their condolences, highlighting Hsu’s talent, professionalism, and the warmth she brought to her roles. Her portrayal of strong, relatable female characters resonated with audiences, leaving a lasting legacy in the world of Asian television dramas.

According to reports, Hsu’s family plans to cremate her remains in Japan and return her ashes to Taiwan for a memorial service. Fans have been paying their respects by revisiting her body of work, sharing memorable scenes from her dramas, and expressing their sorrow at her sudden departure.

Barbie Hsu’s death marks a significant loss for the entertainment industry. Her contributions as an actress and singer have left an indelible mark on popular culture, and her performances will continue to be cherished by audiences worldwide. As fans mourn her passing, they also celebrate the legacy she leaves behind—a testament to her talent, dedication, and the joy she brought to countless viewers.
